Program dates: Saturday, May 9 – Friday, May 15, 2026 in Washington, D.C.
Eligibility Requirements
Open to current undergraduate and graduate students (including those within six months of graduation) in the United States.
Students from all majors and disciplines are welcome to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate an interest in learning about fusion energy policy.
U.S. citizenship is not required.
U. Wisconsin–Madison students: Per FuSD Bylaws, because two of this year’s officers are from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, no additional UW–Madison students are eligible to apply for the 2026 cohort. This provision ensures broad student representation across schools.
Students from UW–Madison are strongly encouraged to apply for the 2027 cohort and future programs.
About the Fusion Student Delegation (FuSD)
The Fusion Student Delegation (FuSD) offers a unique opportunity for students to spend a week in Washington, D.C., learning about the fusion energy policy landscape. Delegates engage with policymakers, experts, and industry leaders, advocating for the future of fusion energy. The week is packed with meetings, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to immerse students in the world of fusion policy.
What Makes a Strong Candidate
A strong application will reflect:
A genuine interest in and knowledge of fusion energy and policy (through coursework, extracurriculars, research, or personal passion).
Effective communication skills and the ability to advocate for important causes.
A collaborative spirit in working with fellow delegates.
Responsibilities of a Delegation Member
Leading up to the week in D.C., selected delegates will be expected to:
Attend virtual preparation sessions.
Research key topics related to fusion energy policy.
Contribute actively to group discussions and meetings.
Treat fellow delegates and all program participants with respect and professionalism.
Delegates will:
Understand the role of Congress, executive agencies, think tanks, and industry groups in shaping fusion innovation.
Advocate for fusion-relevant policy (research, education, regulation) to congressional staff and executive officials.
Analyze existing public policy documents and draft original policy briefs.
Network with fusion industry leaders, scientific experts, and policymakers in Washington, D.C.
Clarify your own role as a student in the fusion ecosystem.
Funding Information
Selected students are responsible for securing funding to support their participation in Washington, D.C. This is typically arranged through their academic departments. FuSD officers will provide guidance and support in identifying funding sources.
